How I Built My Own Path to a 482 Visa - Part One: Building the Foundation

What if, instead of finding an Australian employer to sponsor you, you could build a genuine Australian business around the skills and experience you already have?

In Part One of this personal journey, I share how I researched and built the foundations that eventually enabled my Australian company to become an approved sponsor.

I was over 45, an intellectual property lawyer with more than 20 years of professional experience, and already had experience working with Australian companies and clients. Rather than simply searching for a visa pathway, I started with a different question:

What skills and experience do I already have that could create genuine value in Australia?

That question led me to establish VAI Pacific Consulting Pty Ltd and progressively build a genuine Australian operation.

In this ebook, I share the practical groundwork behind that journey, including:

  • researching the 482 pathway and potential refusal risks;

  • assessing my existing skills against Australian opportunities;

  • identifying a genuine commercial opportunity;

  • establishing an Australian company;

  • obtaining a Director ID and appointing a resident director;

  • engaging professional legal and accounting assistance;

  • employing a part-time staff member with Australian working rights;

  • establishing an office in South Bank;

  • operating the business while I continued working offshore;

  • building revenue, financial records and evidence of genuine commercial activity;

  • why I allowed the company to develop a track record before moving to nomination;

  • my first unsuccessful sponsorship application and what I learned from it; and

  • eventually becoming an approved sponsor.

I also introduce my Three-Circle Test:

YOUR SKILLS + AUSTRALIAN DEMAND + A GENUINE BUSINESS

and provide practical hypothetical examples to help readers think about how their own existing skills and experience might create a genuine Australian commercial opportunity.

This is not a "guaranteed 482 visa" guide.

It is the story of the groundwork, research, investment, setbacks and commercial decisions behind my own experience.

Who is this ebook for?

This ebook may be particularly interesting to experienced professionals, entrepreneurs and business owners who are researching Australian business and skilled migration opportunities and want to understand one person's real-world experience of building an Australian business before progressing to sponsorship, nomination and a 482 visa application.

Part One focuses on the foundation. Part Two will explore how my company moved from being an approved sponsor to nominating me for a position.
