Long before timber was gathered, ropes were fastened or sails were raised, the journey began quietly, with sacred intention, personal discipline and careful preparation.

In Gavera Gogo, Mea Podi Vai draws upon the recorded words of his great-grandfather, Kohu Vagi Rahobada, and Vai Dikana Rahobada to explore the traditional practices that preceded the construction of a lakatoi.

Six moons of helaga and sihi daudau, a husband carrying his purpose in silence, a wife preparing food in secrecy, and a clan gathering in the irutahuna all formed part of this sacred beginning. Only after the people had been fed was the intention revealed.

Through the emergence of the Ani Koi Tauna, this deeply personal cultural reflection reveals that leadership in Motuan society began not with an announcement, but with sacrifice, restraint, hospitality and trust.
