IRURU MATANA - The Stories Etched Beneath Her Eyes
What if the markings beneath a woman’s eyes were not merely decoration, but the permanent record of her family’s history?
Iruru Matana - The Stories Etched Beneath Her Eyes is a deeply personal journey into Motuan tradition, ancestral memory and the cultural meaning of revareva.
For years, Mea Podi Vai searched for historical recordings or writings that might preserve the voice of his great-grandfather, Kohu Vagi Rahobada - a traditionalist who remained closely connected to the old ways during the arrival of the London Missionary Society.
That search eventually led to fragile anthropological records from the 1930s to the 1950s and, almost unbelievably, transcripts of interviews with Kohu Vagi Rahobada himself.
Within those interviews, his great-grandfather explains the meaning of traditional markings known as Iruru Matana “tears” placed beneath a woman’s eyes.
These markings were not simply about the woman’s personal status. They could honour the achievements of her father, including conducting an important Turia mourning ceremony or leading the construction of a lakatoi for the Hiri.
The daughter became a living record.
Her markings carried the memory of an event, the achievement of her father and the honour of her family.
Through family memory, archival discovery and the striking image of Hiri Hanenamo contestant Hera, this ebook invites readers to look beyond the surface, and recognise the stories that may be permanently etched into the people shown in our historical photographs.

They were stories carried upon a daughter.
