Discover an ancestral Motuan lesson about patience, discipline and protecting what belongs to the community.

Niu Dohana – Wisdom in Waiting recounts a powerful story shared by Maimu Matagu with Philip Maimu at Taikone on 15 October 1963.

What begins as a fishing expedition to Daugo becomes a carefully organised cultural lesson. The fishermen are instructed to catch only Kwarabada - swordfish. When they return, every catch is counted, every effort recognised and the fish distributed among the households.

Then Maimu Matagu declares the Niu Dohana: the law of the coconut tree.

No one may take a coconut freely or before the appointed time. Even one that falls naturally must be put aside and left untouched. When the proper time arrives, the coconuts are gathered and distributed so that every person receives a share.

Through this personal journey into Vabukori, Taikone and Motuan language, Mea Podi Vai reveals that the law was never merely about coconuts. It was a practical system of governance, sustainability, discipline and community order.

Its message remains relevant today:

If everyone takes whenever they want, nothing will remain. But if we respect time, exercise restraint and act together, what we have can grow.
