THE LEGEND OF IRAMO HADA
When Walking Away Became a New Beginning
A journey that began with betrayal would eventually lead to the discovery of water, the planting of new gardens, friendship between peoples, and the beginning of a new community.
My journey into this story began in Rarotonga, where I watched a spectacular cultural performance bring an ancient Pacific legend to life. As I watched, one question stayed with me:
What about us? What stories have our own ancestors left behind?
That question led me to an account recorded in 1930 and attributed to Igo Erua or possibly Erue of Elevala.
The Legend of Iramo-Hada tells the story of a man who leaves Buria in the darkness, carrying his young son, his possessions and the seeds he will need to begin another life. What begins as a deeply personal story of betrayal, pain and departure ultimately becomes a story of forgiveness, discovery, friendship and new beginnings.
Written from a personal perspective and in an engaging storytelling style, this eBook also explores the deeper Motu-Koitabu cultural meanings hidden within Iramo-Hada’s actions, including:
- The meaning of possessions, or kohu, within family relationships;
- How valuable objects can represent trust, respect and connection;
- The cultural significance of returning or taking possessions during conflict;
- The finality of gathering one’s belongings and leaving;
- The important role of elders in preventing anger from becoming permanent separation; and
- How culture continues to speak quietly through our actions.
This is more than the retelling of an old legend. It is an invitation to look again at the stories, customs and cultural knowledge carried by our families and communities.
Sometimes walking away from a troubled place does not end the story.
Sometimes it begins the legend.
